Food provenance

It’s happened. We’ve done our first home kill.

We now have a chest freezer full to bursting of beef. Scotch fillet, sirloin, rump, top side steak, round steak, osso bucco, steak for casseroles and stews, beef for roasting and beef for barbecuing, beef mince and beef sausages. Except for T-bone steaks (we decided against them), you name it, we’ve got. Anyone dining at our place over the coming months, be warned, beef will be on the menu.

Not that a building can talk but if our old local community hall had a voice, I think you might have heard ACDC’s lyrics being whispered from the timber walls, all hoarse and raspy, in the early hours of a Sunday morning a few weeks ago. On the 10th May, we held the 2nd Annual Nabiac Ball at our hall. The night was a huge success, and the hall rocked, literally.

Despite initial hesitation from some about holding another ball so soon (last year’s Winter Ball was at the end of June), we went ahead with planning, and amazingly with a month to go, tickets had completely sold out. Either word has spread about the success of last year’s Ball or locals are really desperate for a night out.

It ain’t over till it’s over

It’s been another couple of action-packed weeks.

Our steers, who’d grown into large, strapping and handsome bullocks, have gone and it wasn’t a particularly smooth process, but more on that in another post. Jones caused absolute havoc at soccer training, and we’ve had the local agricultural show.

Time certainly does fly by, and Bec C and I couldn’t believe that it was a year since the last Show, the one that was cancelled due to rain. The Wallamba District Agricultural & Horticultural Show, known to locals as simply the Nabiac Show, went ahead this year without a hitch. The skies were clear and in fact, it was uncharacteristically warm for an autumn day. The Produce Shed, was as we’d all expected, pretty sad. At best, there was half the amount of produce that would normally be on display, thanks (or no thanks) to the long, hot and very dry summer we’ve just had.

It was nonetheless a fun and happy day.. that is, once the visit to the vet was over. Continue reading

The Quiet Country Life

Well, it’s been a few weeks between drinks.

Events conspired against us, and we’ve just come through a very busy three week period. Two 2-day work trips to Sydney, a 2-day work trip to Brisbane, a girls weekend away, a 5th Birthday for my little man, a 5th Birthday party with 15 kids (never doing that again.. what was I thinking?), a visit from my in-laws (to coincide with the birthday celebrations), a husband also traveling for work, my Mum flying back into Sydney after nearly 5 months overseas with her sister, a good friend’s 30th birthday celebrations (Sydney again) and all this on top of the normal weekly routine.

Sundried Linen and Living Flora

bec's verandahI was talking with a friend yesterday, as we sat outside my house on the verandah in soaring 30 degree temperatures (yes, I realise this photo isn’t actually my verandah but is Bec H’s and that’s her in the foreground, but it’s so good I just had to use it anyway. Photographer: Dougal), and she mentioned having seen an ad for a bed and breakfast up north, promoting none other than ‘Sundried Linen’.
